The Bilen Gyals
(2022)In this photography series titled "The Bilen Gyals," I explore cultural identity with my aunts, wandering the streets of West London draped in dark abayas and vibrant red bilen scarves, reclaiming our space confidently. Despite past feelings of shame and embarrassment, art has allowed me to heal and reconnect with my Eritrean identity and heritage. This project represents Eritrean women as outsiders adapting to a new home in the Western world after war and displacement.
